Budget level

What a stay in Budapest costs

In Budapest you pay in forints, and we convert everything to US dollars at the European Central Bank rate. According to KAYAK, a room in a four-star hotel averages about 57,500 Ft a night. March is the cheapest month and May the most expensive.

Public transport is cheap: a single-ride ticket costs 500 Ft, a 24-hour travelcard 2,750 Ft and a 72-hour travelcard 5,750 Ft. The airport bus to the center costs 2,500 Ft.

The biggest attraction costs are the Széchenyi Baths (13,200 Ft Monday to Thursday, 14,800 Ft on other days) and the Parliament tour (7,000 Ft for citizens of the European Economic Area, 14,000 Ft for other visitors). The lower terraces of Fisherman's Bastion and the views from Castle Hill are free.

How we estimate

These amounts are estimates built from publicly available prices: average accommodation prices for the month and typical daily spending on food, public transport and attractions. For months where we found no data, we filled in our own estimate. Actual prices depend on your dates and where you stay.

For children up to 12 we assume 60% of an adult's food cost and 50% of an adult's attractions cost. At budget and standard level we price families with children an apartment or family room for up to four people; at luxury level one room takes two adults and one child. These are our assumptions. The luxury level has no upper limit, so we show a “from” amount.
