What a stay in Edinburgh costs
In Edinburgh you pay in pounds, and we convert everything to US dollars at the European Central Bank rate. According to KAYAK, a room in a four-star hotel averages about £225 a night. January is the cheapest month and July the most expensive; August, during the festivals, is expensive too.
The cheapest way from the airport is the regular city bus 17 or 18 for £2.40. The Airlink 100 express costs £6 and the tram £7.50. With contactless payment, buses and trams charge no more than £5.70 a day.
The biggest attraction costs are Camera Obscura (£24.95), Edinburgh Castle (£23.50 online), the Royal Yacht Britannia (£23) and the Palace of Holyroodhouse (£22). Tickets bought in advance are cheaper. The Royal Mile, Arthur's Seat, Calton Hill and the National Museum of Scotland cost nothing.
How we estimate
These amounts are estimates built from publicly available prices: average accommodation prices for the month and typical daily spending on food, public transport and attractions. For months where we found no data, we filled in our own estimate. Actual prices depend on your dates and where you stay.
For children up to 12 we assume 60% of an adult's food cost and 50% of an adult's attractions cost. At budget and standard level we price families with children an apartment or family room for up to four people; at luxury level one room takes two adults and one child. These are our assumptions. The luxury level has no upper limit, so we show a “from” amount.
