What a stay in London costs
London is one of the most expensive cities in our list. According to KAYAK, a room averages about £295 a night in a four-star hotel and about £485 in a five-star. January is the cheapest month and September the most expensive.
The cheapest way from Heathrow airport is the Tube (Piccadilly line) for £5.90. The Elizabeth line costs £13.90, and the Heathrow Express to Paddington £26 on the day (from £10 well in advance). In town, pay contactless: buses cost no more than £5.25 a day, and the Tube and buses in zones 1–2 no more than £8.90.
The biggest museums are free: the British Museum, the National Gallery, Tate Modern and the Natural History Museum. The priciest sights are the Tower of London (£38), Westminster Abbey (£32) and the London Eye (from £29 online, £39 at the gate).
How we estimate
These amounts are estimates built from publicly available prices: average accommodation prices for the month and typical daily spending on food, public transport and attractions. For months where we found no data, we filled in our own estimate. Actual prices depend on your dates and where you stay.
For children up to 12 we assume 60% of an adult's food cost and 50% of an adult's attractions cost. At budget and standard level we price families with children an apartment or family room for up to four people; at luxury level one room takes two adults and one child. These are our assumptions. The luxury level has no upper limit, so we show a “from” amount.
