Budget level

What a stay in Los Angeles costs

In Los Angeles, accommodation is the biggest cost. According to KAYAK, a room averages about $300 a night in a four-star hotel and about $615 in a five-star. January is the cheapest month; February and March are the most expensive.

A Metro rail or bus ride costs $1.75, and fare capping means you pay at most $5 a day and $18 a week. From LAX, take Metro rail via the LAX/Metro Transit Center or the FlyAway bus to Union Station for $12.75.

The Getty Center and Griffith Observatory are free (you pay for parking), as are the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Santa Monica Pier. Universal Studios Hollywood tickets start at $109.

How we estimate

These amounts are estimates built from publicly available prices: average accommodation prices for the month and typical daily spending on food, public transport and attractions. For months where we found no data, we filled in our own estimate. Actual prices depend on your dates and where you stay.

For children up to 12 we assume 60% of an adult's food cost and 50% of an adult's attractions cost. At budget and standard level we price families with children an apartment or family room for up to four people; at luxury level one room takes two adults and one child. These are our assumptions. The luxury level has no upper limit, so we show a “from” amount.
