What a stay in New York costs
New York is expensive mainly because of accommodation. According to the city's tourism office, the average hotel room rate in 2025 was $334 a night. KAYAK reports that February is the cheapest month and December the most expensive.
The subway is the easiest way around: a ride costs $3, and after 12 rides in a week the rest are free (a $35 cap). From JFK you can take the AirTrain for $8.75 and then the subway; a taxi to Manhattan has a flat fare of $70 plus surcharges.
Restaurant prices exclude the 8.875% sales tax and the tip, customarily 18–20%. Observation decks cost from $42 (Top of the Rock) and from $46 (Empire State Building); the Met and MoMA are $30 each.
How we estimate
These amounts are estimates built from publicly available prices: average accommodation prices for the month and typical daily spending on food, public transport and attractions. For months where we found no data, we filled in our own estimate. Actual prices depend on your dates and where you stay.
For children up to 12 we assume 60% of an adult's food cost and 50% of an adult's attractions cost. At budget and standard level we price families with children an apartment or family room for up to four people; at luxury level one room takes two adults and one child. These are our assumptions. The luxury level has no upper limit, so we show a “from” amount.
