What a stay in Rome costs
In Rome, accommodation is the biggest cost. According to KAYAK, a room averages about €205 a night in a four-star hotel and about €430 in a five-star. January is the cheapest month and October the most expensive.
Public transport is cheap: a 100-minute ticket costs €1.50 and a weekly ticket €29. Children under 10 travel free with an adult. The cheapest way from Fiumicino airport is the bus (€7 to Termini station); the Leonardo Express train costs €14, and a taxi to the center has a flat fare of €55.
The biggest attraction costs are the Vatican Museums (€20 at the door, €25 booked online), the Colosseum with the Roman Forum and Palatine (€18) and the Borghese Gallery (€18 with booking). The Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and Rome's squares cost nothing.
How we estimate
These amounts are estimates built from publicly available prices: average accommodation prices for the month and typical daily spending on food, public transport and attractions. For months where we found no data, we filled in our own estimate. Actual prices depend on your dates and where you stay.
For children up to 12 we assume 60% of an adult's food cost and 50% of an adult's attractions cost. At budget and standard level we price families with children an apartment or family room for up to four people; at luxury level one room takes two adults and one child. These are our assumptions. The luxury level has no upper limit, so we show a “from” amount.
