San Francisco is one of the most expensive US cities. According to KAYAK, a room averages about $295 a night in a four-star hotel and about $820 in a five-star. December is the cheapest month and March the most expensive.

A Muni fare costs $2.85 and a cable car ride $9. The Muni Visitor Passport, cable cars included, costs $15 for a day and $47 for 7 days. BART runs from SFO to Powell St. downtown for $11.80 (with Clipper).

An Alcatraz tour with the ferry costs $47.95 and the California Academy of Sciences $49. Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge and seeing the Painted Ladies from Alamo Square are free.

How we estimate

These amounts are estimates built from publicly available prices: average accommodation prices for the month and typical daily spending on food, public transport and attractions. For months where we found no data, we filled in our own estimate. Actual prices depend on your dates and where you stay.

For children up to 12 we assume 60% of an adult's food cost and 50% of an adult's attractions cost. At budget and standard level we price families with children an apartment or family room for up to four people; at luxury level one room takes two adults and one child. These are our assumptions. The luxury level has no upper limit, so we show a “from” amount.
