What a stay in Tokyo costs

In Tokyo, accommodation is the biggest cost. According to KAYAK, a room averages about ¥37,500 a night in a four-star hotel and about ¥92,000 in a five-star. August is the cheapest month; March and April, when the cherry trees bloom, are the most expensive.

A subway ride costs ¥180 to ¥330, and the Tokyo Subway Ticket for visitors costs ¥1,000 for 24 hours and ¥2,000 for 72 hours. From Haneda airport, the bus to Tokyo Station costs ¥1,200; from Narita, the Skyliner costs about ¥2,580 and the Narita Express ¥3,140.

Famous temples and shrines such as Sensō-ji and Meiji are free. Paid attractions include Tokyo Skytree (from ¥1,800), Shibuya Sky (from ¥2,700 online) and teamLab Planets (from ¥3,800).

How we estimate

These amounts are estimates built from publicly available prices: average accommodation prices for the month and typical daily spending on food, public transport and attractions. For months where we found no data, we filled in our own estimate. Actual prices depend on your dates and where you stay.

For children up to 12 we assume 60% of an adult's food cost and 50% of an adult's attractions cost. At budget and standard level we price families with children an apartment or family room for up to four people; at luxury level one room takes two adults and one child. These are our assumptions. The luxury level has no upper limit, so we show a “from” amount.
