What a Tuscany road trip costs
There are three routes to choose from, planned by the site's author, all from Pisa airport. The weekend is a loop through Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Siena, San Gimignano and Volterra: 3 nights and about 210 miles. The week adds Arezzo, Cortona, the Val d'Orcia, Pitigliano and the Saturnia hot springs. Two weeks means two bases, in Chianti and in the Val d'Orcia, with sightseeing days alternating with rest.
The three-city weekend works all year. The longer routes are seasonal: outside Florence and Pisa many hotels, farm stays and restaurants close for the winter, so we price them from April to October. May, June and September are the most expensive months, and in Siena so are the days of the Palio, July 2 and August 16.
We price the car per vehicle, not per person: the rental, fuel for the whole route at a price refreshed every night from Italian ministry data, highway tolls and parking. Driving into the historic centers is forbidden, so a car park outside the walls is a fixed cost. For attractions we add the Leaning Tower, the Uffizi and Siena Cathedral, and on the longer routes more of Florence's museums.
How we estimate
These amounts are estimates built from publicly available prices: average accommodation prices for the month and typical daily spending on food, public transport and attractions. For months where we found no data, we filled in our own estimate. Actual prices depend on your dates and where you stay.
For children up to 12 we assume 60% of an adult's food cost and 50% of an adult's attractions cost. At budget and standard level we price families with children an apartment or family room for up to four people; at luxury level one room takes two adults and one child. These are our assumptions. The luxury level has no upper limit, so we show a “from” amount.
