What a US West Coast road trip costs
There are two routes to choose from, both planned and driven by the site's author. The shorter one is a loop from San Francisco: 14 days, 13 nights and about 2,400 miles through California, Arizona and Nevada. The longer one is a loop from Los Angeles: 21 days, 20 nights and about 2,800 miles, adding Route 66, Sedona, Monument Valley, Page and Zion National Park in Utah.
After accommodation, the biggest cost is the car. We price it per vehicle, not per person: the rental for the whole trip, fuel for the whole route and fees. We check the gasoline price every night in US government data, which is published once a week, and average it for the route: California is noticeably more expensive than the neighboring states.
Since 2026, visitors from abroad pay $100 per person to enter Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Sequoia; their $250 annual pass covers the vehicle and up to 4 people at every park on the route. US residents pay $80 for the annual pass, and that is the amount this version of the calculator uses.
How we estimate
These amounts are estimates built from publicly available prices: average accommodation prices for the month and typical daily spending on food, public transport and attractions. For months where we found no data, we filled in our own estimate. Actual prices depend on your dates and where you stay.
For children up to 12 we assume 60% of an adult's food cost and 50% of an adult's attractions cost. At budget and standard level we price families with children an apartment or family room for up to four people; at luxury level one room takes two adults and one child. These are our assumptions. The luxury level has no upper limit, so we show a “from” amount.
